Expect a superb early season fishery this year in the Sun Valley area. We expect June to be the best fishing of the summer season, and Terry Ring, owner of Silver Creek Outfitters, is already predicting the last ten days of June to be the best ten days of the fishing year.
With good snow pack and a healthy fishery the Big Wood should produce prolific Green Drake hatches in June, as well as, a variety of Stone fly species. This is the one time of year that we can throw a dry fly bigger than a grasshopper.
On Silver Creek the Pale Morning Dun emergence and spinner falls should be strong. These will mix with beatis activity and a smattering of early season Tricos on hot June mornings, near the end of the month, which can produce furious activity. The early season also brings the famous Brown Drake to the lower reaches of the Creek where many locals take advantage of this short-lived event. June also is a good time on Silver Creek to find gullible trout, as the seasons big influx of anglers doesn't normally occur until after the fourth of July weekend.
Without question, if you miss our early fishing this year, you may miss our best fishing. A productive summer awaits, but don't let spring slip by, without fishing our greatest "big bug" hatches of the year.
The Snow Water Equivalent for the Wood River Valley is 75% of normal.
The Big Wood River, the Big Lost River, and Silver Creek are closed to fishing for the season. They will reopen again
on Saturday, May 25th. The Little Wood River is open to fishing year round.
